Map of Kawau Island
Kawau Island was the site of one of New Zealand's earliest copper mining ventures and became home for Sir George Grey in 1862 - a key political figure in New Zealand's history.
Today, about 10 percent of the island is protected as publicly owned reserves that are managed by the Department of Conservation. The remainder is privately owned with a small resident population. Visitors are welcome to voyage out to Kawau Island in their own vessel or catch a ferry - a popular choice for visitors to Rodney.
A key tourist attraction is Sir George's former home, Mansion House, and its manicured gardens. The house, in Mansion House Bay, is open to the public and has been furnished with antique furniture to give visitors a taste of a time past.
The island covers about 5000 acres and is covered in bush, mainly Kanuka, Manuka and Pohutukawa. It is a superb place to get away from it all - especially during weekdays.
The island has a restaurant and a range of accommodation is available for holiday makers. Expect to enjoy tropical weather, beautiful sea views and sunsets to die for.
You can get to Kawau Island by water taxis and ferries. Travel from Sandspit Wharf near Warkworth.
